Destiny Getting ‘Major Content Release’ This Fall

Destiny is set to get a “major content release” later this year according to an Activision exec.

Eric Hirshberg revealed during an investor call last night that, while the last solid expansion we know about is House of Wolves sometime between April and June, there’s more stuff to come too.

“In Q2, we expect to launch the game’s second expansion pack, House of Wolves, and later this year, we will announce a major content release for the fall, so stay tuned,”he said. “And a very robust pipeline planned after that.”

Earlier this year, a leak suggested a much more feature-rich offering called Comet: Plague of Darkness would be coming with new subclasses, weapon types, PvP maps, story missions, and locations — and might be large enough to be available on a disc as well.

Could we be seeing a shift to a different expansion/DLC model than the one Activision has employed thus far? As we learned last night that Destiny has over 16 million registered players, it’s likely there’s a lot of people keen to know more. Sadly for now, we’ll have to settle for House of Wolves. Earlier this week, a Reddit user suggested we’d be seeing that expansion on May 19 after he datamined some files.

Mass Effect 4 to benefit greatly by dropping Xbox 360 & PS3 support

BioWare’s decision to focus development of Mass Effect 4 on new-gen consoles and PC will bring big benefits to the gameplay, BioWare exec Aaryn Flynn has explained in a post on NeoGAF.  Flynn was posting in relation to concerns that the new Mass Effect would be based on a template set out by Dragon Age Inquisition.

“I’ve seen a few thoughts like this recently, and thought I’d weigh in as much as I can right now,” he explained. “I have a good idea where it’s coming from. All of our games are using Frostbite now. We’ve said the next Mass Effect (and our new IP, but I won’t expand on that yet) uses some of the technology from DAI. We’ve been enjoying building larger areas that you can explore with less friction, so that’ll be there as well.

“But after that, the next Mass Effect will be (and should be) drawing on its own rich and successful past more than what DAI would say it should do.”

Flynn adds: “Take the Mako, something we’ve already shown in prototype form. We had that in ME1, and bringing it back is more related to a feeling that we can do it much better than we did before and fulfil the original promise of that gameplay. That has nothing to do with DAI. In fact, I’d go so far as to say that dropping the older consoles has had more impact on the overall gameplay goals of the next Mass Effect game than what DAI successfully accomplished.”

Arkham Knight was the most pre-ordered game on Amazon in January

Batman: Arkham Knight was the most pre-ordered game on Amazon.co.uk in January, the retailer has revealed.  Dying Light came in second, no doubt as players prepared for its original January 28 release, with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt in third. Tom Clancy’s The Division and Halo 5: Guardians followed in fourth and fifth, with The Order: 1886, GTA 5 PC, Battlefield Hardline, Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain and Uncharted 4 rounding out the top 10.

Despite last month’s beta, however, Evolve failed to crack the top 10, placing just outside at No.11.

“It’s clear to see customers are remaining loyal to their favourite franchises with Batman: Arkham Knight, The Witcher 3, Grand Theft Auto V and the redesigned Battlefield Hardline,” said Xavier Garambois, Vice President of EU Retail at Amazon. “It’s also great to see customers putting their faith into innovative new games like monster-hunter Evolve or crowd-funded Project CARS, which are set to do very well this year.”

Arkham Knight’s success is likely due to Amazon opening pre-orders for its exclusive Limited Edition last month.  Take a look below for the top 20 pre-ordered games on Amazon in January 2015.

Bungie finally squashing one of Destiny’s most annoying bugs

Bungie is finally preparing to squash one of Destiny’s most-complained-about bugs.

1

The frequently-reported issue causes players’ coveted heavy weapon ammunition to disappear upon death, returning to orbit, or when encountering one of Destiny’s delightful unskippable cut-scenes.

Heavy weapon ammo is rare, and if you’ve played Destiny for a while you will have probably spent a decent amount of in-game currency on stocking it up.

Which is why its continued disappearance has been a bit of a bug-bear – and why Bungie is finally (almost) ready to deploy a fix.

“For some time now, we’ve been tracking this one,” Bungie explained via the developer’s latest Weekly Update.

“To date, the best we’ve been able to do is to admit that we were aware of the issue. This week, we can give you some additional information.”

The issue boils down to the effect in-game perks have on the amount of heavy ammo players can hold, and Destiny incorrectly applying the value.

A solution has now been found, but the fix won’t be fully deployed until nearer the end of February.
